Volunteers Recognition Award 2008
August 28, 2008 by maknacancerHi everyone!!!
We are at three days from Merdeka Celebration right now, and I hope you are all getting ready to celebrate 51 years of independence! Congratulations Malaysia!
Last weekend at MAKNA we showed our praise to our volunteers and they had a celebration on their own: the MAKNA Volunteers Recognition Award 2008, at MAKPEM Bandar Baru Sentul.
Volunteers are an important part of our efforts to fight back cancer, as they share their time, their experience and energy to support our patients. They more than deserve our reverence and respect, like Mr. Jacob Matthews, whom received our Excellence Award this year.
You must have seen in the news, we also made public our intetntion of building a Cancer Center on our own, which will provide the best for the poorest. At MAKNA, we believe that everyone has the right to receive the best treatment, even if they can’t afford it totally.
However, the challenges ahead are high: 200 million ringgits will be necessary to build a hospital that will offer democratic access to cancer treatment. But with the support of our volunteers, donors, staff and partners, it is not impossible! You can also help to lighten the burden, as a volunteer, as a donor, or offering any kind of help. Just give us a call and say how you can help!
More about our Cancer Center in the next posts. Don’t miss it!
Yours Trully,
Matheus Trevizoli Barrachi
MAKNA’s International Division
Cooperation Trip to Viet Nam
August 11, 2008 by maknacancerHi everyone!
Maybe you are not yet informed about MAKNA´s plans of becoming an International NGO and what it really means, but here in our HQ the work has already started! And we are active as usual…
First of all, MAKNA has recently founded its international division, which I am proud of being part of! My name is Matheus Trevizoli Barrachi and I was responsible for the last post; and yes, I am from Brazil. After almost 24 hours inside a plane, here I am woking specially for all our patients and donnors… specially for you!
That said, what is my job at MAKNA? Well, basically, I try to bring our services to other people around the globe, finding new partners in different countries so we can start, somehow, to offer support to people suffering from cancer.
After deep analysies, Viet Nam was chosen as our first potential partner. For that matter, me and my working mate Claudio (yes! We are two brazilians working at MAKNA! Guess if we can make a football team?) made a short trip to this country, so we could make some field work, talk with partners and meet representatives of other NGOs to talk about the challenges ahead.
The results were fantastic. All the meetings were very proficuous and now we have a better picture about how to plan our activities to reach our objective of helping as much people as we can.
Of course there is a lot of work ahead and we are aware of that! But you can also help, giving your suggestions and insights about our work, which you can follow through our blog or through our magazine Neoplasia, issued every quarter of year. You can also call our office (603-2162 9178 ) and make your questions, or visit our website (www.makna.org.my)! So, you can always get informed about what is happening at MAKNA. See you around!

Walk for Life 2008
June 25, 2008 by maknacancerHello everyone! Welcome to MAKNA’ s Weblog! MAKNA (Majlis Kanser Nasional or National Cancer Council) is a non-profit organization based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, that provides curative and palliative care to patients with cancer, information and cancer awareness to the general public, along with investments in research.
This small presentation is a must, since this is our first post. Now, let’s talk about the Walk for Life! Well, the event is not completely strange to Malaysians, since this is not the first edition. Last year, 3,000 people got involved, walking in the streets of Penang. This year, the walk starts at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa Tapak A on 27th July (Sunday), at 8:00 a.m.
It means that, starting today, you have more than one month to get ready for the 4.3 km walk! But before starting, you have to go to any TESCO Hypermarket or Extra, in Klang Valley and Selangor, look for the Costumer Service and ask for a Walk for Life form and do your registration. The registration fee is RM 10 and part of the money goes to our Cancer Research Fund with TESCO. Oh, did I mention that you get a gorgeous t-shirt on the day of the event? Don’t lose the coupons given to you on the act of your registration.
For more information about MAKNA and about Walk for Life 2008, please access http://www.makna.org.my or make your comments on this blog, and we will answer as soon as possible.
Come to walk with us against Cancer. Get healthy, get active, get involved!
